Chapel of Enseada — Senhor Bom Jesus
Overview
The Chapel of Senhor Bom Jesus in Enseada, São Sebastião, restored and reopened as the Neighborhood Museum, featuring caiçara history, photographs, objects and coastal culture. Free admission.
On the Enseada waterfront, on Rodovia Dr. Manoel Hipólito do Rego (No. 5,298), there is a building that for decades carried a weight disproportionate to its size: the Chapel Senhor Bom Jesus, erected in the mid-20th century with the Jesuit aesthetic of Brazil's earliest colonial chapels. It is small, simple, of exposed brick — and it is precisely this architectural humility that makes it so powerful.
After years of abandonment, which reduced it to the state of ruin described in 2018 reports, the São Sebastião City Hall carried out a complete restoration that returned dignity to the building. Revitalized and reopened, the former chapel now functions as the Enseada Neighborhood Museum — an emotional memorial where photographs, objects, accounts and historical records tell the evolution of one of the most traditional neighborhoods on São Sebastião's North Coast, from the life of caiçara fishermen to the present day.
The outdoor area, also urbanized as part of the Enseada waterfront revitalization project, was designed to host cultural performances on weekends and sell local handicrafts — transforming the surroundings of the chapel into a meeting point between history, living culture and the beach landscape. One of those places that go unnoticed at first glance, but that reveal São Sebastião's neighborhood soul to those curious enough to stop, look and listen to the stories the walls keep.
