Overview

The Chapel of São Gonçalo, in São Sebastião, houses the Museum of Sacred Art, with a collection from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Visit the Historic Center; free admission.

Built in the 17th century on the corner of Rua Sebastião Silvestre Neves, just steps from the Mother Church and the Main Square of the Historic Center, the Chapel of São Gonçalo is the oldest religious building in São Sebastião still standing — and perhaps the quietest. Its origin is attributed to an act of spontaneous devotion by laypeople, without formal ecclesiastical commission, which makes its existence even more moving: it was the people who raised it, with stone set on clay, in modest dimensions that do not hide the greatness of what they represent.

Over the centuries it passed through the hands of the Carmelites of Guaecá — who introduced the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel there —, the Franciscans of the São Francisco neighborhood and the Parish of São Sebastião. Listed by Condephaat in 1969, progressive deterioration required a full restoration in 1978, and it was then that the Museum of Sacred Art of São Sebastião was born: inaugurated in 1981 through a partnership between the City Hall, the State Government and the Diocesan Curia of Santos, it brings together rare pieces from the Parish of São Sebastião — including clay images from the 17th and 18th centuries found walled up during the restoration of the Mother Church in 2000, as if time had kept them there on purpose.

In October 2025 the emotion was even greater: after 45 years under the care of the Museum of Sacred Art of Santos, a sacred image of the patron Saint Sebastian dating from the 19th century returned to its original home in the Chapel of São Gonçalo — a reunion that brought together authorities, the faithful and researchers and that sounds almost like a secular miracle, the return of a memory to the place where it belongs. Restored in 2023 with an investment of R$440 mil in roof works, security systems and expansion of the collection, the Chapel of São Gonçalo is today a living museum, supported by the ProAC call and recognized as one of the most relevant cultural facilities on the northern coast of São Paulo.
