Overview

Fazenda Santana, in São Sebastião: a listed colonial heritage site with a water-powered sugar mill, slave quarters and a sacred collection. Visits by prior authorization and the Feast of Saint Anne, from July 18 to 26.

The main house of Fazenda Santana is one of the most complete and moving historical heritage sites in São Sebastião — a place where colonial stonework, the water-powered mill, the slave quarters and religious tradition coexist on a single property that has crossed three centuries practically intact, in the Pontal da Cruz neighborhood.

Origin and Construction
The first wing of the manor was erected in 1743, in stone on the ground floor and wattle-and-daub above, to house a sugarcane mill and cachaça production — the Engenho Real, powered by a waterwheel whose complete mechanism still exists on site. The farm's name is a devotion: the founder was devoted to Saint Anne, grandmother of Jesus, and named the property in her honor — a tradition kept alive today in the Novena of Saint Anne, held annually from July 18 to 26, directly at the farm's mill. In the 19th century, with the coffee cycle, part of the production was converted and a building from that period that possibly housed coffee storage still exists.

Heritage Listing and Collection
Listed by Condephaat by resolution of June 28, 1972, the legal protection covered much more than the manor — it includes the remaining mill and slave quarters buildings, an aqueduct, an 18th-century porch, liturgical vessels, seven sacred images and antique furniture. The ensemble is a direct material testimony to the slave system that sustained the colonial economy of the São Paulo coast — a memory that the stones of the slave quarters carry without euphemism.

Present and Visitation
Fazenda Santana is private property that remains in the hands of the descendants of the founding family — Eduardo Hipólito do Rego and Pedro Rego are the current guardians — who since 2017 have opened the gates for visits, turning the place into one of the most singular historical-cultural routes of the northern coast. The liveliest aspect of this public presence is the Feast of Saint Anne, a free event that brings together residents, tourists and devotees around the mill, with novena, music and traditional cuisine.
