Overview
Itaçucê Islet in Barequeçaba, São Sebastião, 700 m from the beach: a protected postcard-like landmark, ideal for kayaking, SUP and seabird watching.
The Itaçucê Islet — also spelled Itassucê and popularly known as Barequeçaba Island — is the most charming and accessible little islet on the North Coast of São Sebastião, located just 700 meters from Barequeçaba Beach, between the Historic Center and Guaecá.
Landscape and Environment
Seen from the Barequeçaba shoreline or the Guaecá lookout, the islet stands out as an almost decorative element in the landscape — a compact rocky formation covered in vegetation, floating on the turquoise blue of the São Sebastião Channel with the silhouette of Pico de São Sebastião on Ilhabela in the background. From the lookout, you can clearly see the submerged rocks surrounding the islet, creating a halo of colors ranging from emerald green to deep blue.
Fauna and Environmental Protection
The Itaçucê Islet is protected by environmental law and serves as shelter and a landing and nesting point for several species of seabirds that use the rocky formation as part of their migratory and breeding routes — making it an important spot for birdwatchers and scientific ecotourism on the northern coast of São Paulo.
Access and Visitation
The proximity to the coast — only a 700-meter crossing in calm waters — makes the islet accessible by kayak, SUP or small boat. It is even one of the stop points on the nautical tour from Ilhabela to São Sebastião by sea, which runs along the north coast passing Brava, Calhetas and Barequeçaba.
