Porto Grande Beach is located in the neighborhood of the same name, about 1 km north of the Historic Center, on Avenida Guarda-Mor Lobo Viana, between Praia do Tebar and Praia do Arrastão. The sand strip is fine, white and gently sloping, with an extremely calm sea facing the São Sebastião channel and Ilhabela. As with other channel beaches in the municipality, swimming is not widely practiced, but the place compensates with scenic beauty, tranquility and good urban structure. Porto Grande's main highlight is sailing. The position in the channel, the regularity of the winds that blow between the mainland and Ilhabela and the relative safety of the calm waters form an ideal set of conditions for the sport, which over time turned the beach into a reference point for the nautical community of the northern coast. On the main avenue, a Sailing Square honors this tradition with a monument and a communal space. The infrastructure is well maintained: the beachfront promenade has restrooms, fixed chess and checkers tables, food trucks, a stage for small artistic performances, a bicycle rack and parking for about 26 vehicles. The volleyball nets fixed in the sand are used by residents throughout the week, especially in the late afternoon. The tranquillity of the place, the proximity to the center and the beauty of the channel-island ensemble make Porto Grande a beach much appreciated by residents for morning walks, bicycle toll on the cycle path and contemplative pauses, more than for typical bathing leisure. At the end of the sand strip, on the southern corner, a small group of artisanal fishermen preserves the neighborhood's original caiçara spirit, with canoes anchored and nets spread on the beach.
